A Look Into MG’s Ningde, China Factory
Opened in September 2019, this 140,000 square-meter factory was built on what used to be a swampy tidal flat. In just 17 months, it was transformed into a state-of-the-art facility that can produce 63 vehicles per hour.
According to the publication, Whichcar more than 1,500 people work in two shifts (day and night) at this facility, which operates continuously with only brief breaks for meals. The factory is described as modern, with all the advanced automation technology that you would find on a Western production line.
Future Manufacturing Plans
To meet growing global demand, SAIC is planning to expand MG production into Europe and India. However, production is unlikely to ever happen in Australia due to our high labour costs, but there is strong potential across the international manufacturing arena.
SAIC is planning to build a new manufacturing plant in Europe, which would focus on electric vehicles (EVs). This new facility is part of SAIC’s broader strategy to enhance its global production capabilities and cater to the growing demand for EVs in European markets.
In India, MG Motor is set to open a second manufacturing plant in Gujarat. This new facility will significantly increase the company’s production capacity and will include a dedicated battery assembly unit. This move aligns with MG’s goal to localise production and meet the rising demand for the MG brand in India.
